If chkdsk is unable to detect the hard disk, then it is a hardware failure. You need to replace the hard disk as soon as possible.
If the chkdsk reports some errors, there are chances that the hard disk is damaged. You should run fixboot or fixmbr tools in the Recovery Console to repair hard disk.
