Drive overlay program disabling Windows XP from booting

August 12, 2010 by: 1

In the Windows systems, sometimes, an drive overlay program is called just before the system files are loaded in the memory for booting. It is a third-party program that is needed when the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) of your computer’s motherboard does not support the hard disks if they are larger than 528 MB. There are various hard disks manufacturers such as IBM, Maxtor, Seagate, Quantum, etc that produce these programs. Having said that, at times this program is incompatible with the operating system you are using. On such occasions, the system becomes inaccessible and the precious data becomes insecure because of this. I would recommend to use a third-party data recovery software to recover the data without much efforts.
This discussed problem can be experienced when you start your Windows XP system after doing a fresh installation. In this case, you can see either of the following error messages during the startup and the system is unable to proceed further during startup:

• No operating system”
 • “Setup has determined that Drive C: is corrupted and cannot be repaired. To quit setup press F3.”
 • “Windows could not start because of he following ARC firmware boot configuration problem. Did not properly generate ARC name for HAL and System path. Please check the windows documentation about ARC configuration options and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.”
 • “Stop: 0x0000007b (0xf898963c, 0xc0000034, 0×00000000, 0×00000000)”

Cause:

Such situations are exhibited if and when you have used a drive overlay software application to administer the hard disk. Also contributing to this problem is the fact that some drive overlay programs are incompatible with Windows XP.

Resolution:

To resolve this problem, you should contact the drive overlay program manufacturer to know about the possible way-outs to fix this situation.

Please note that there is the ‘fixmbr’ command that you can use in the Recovery Console to repair the MBR (Master Boot Record) of the system. However, you should avoid using this command in this case as it may result in data loss apart from mere inaccessibility of data.

If the computer data remains inaccessible even after trying out the methods suggested by the drive overlay program manufacturer, then I would recommend using a third-party data recovery software. These data recovery tools have immaculate documentation along with superb user interface to enable you perform data recovery with much ease.

The best data recovery software is Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery that works perfectly in Windows 7, Vista, Server 2003, XP, and 2000. This RAID data recovery utility recovers data from FAT, NTFS, and exFAT file systems. In addition, this file data recovery software is available in two modes, Home and Professional.
