India’s leading Computer manufacturer, HCL Infosystems today announced its entry into the tablet space, with launch of its ME range of tablet PCs starting from Rs.14,990. The company has launched three tablets running on Google’s Android operating system, which will be priced from Rs. 14,990 to Rs.32, 990.

HCL ME Tablet will be available to both individual and enterprise users with HCL’s service and support network. The CEO said that this product is released after a rigorous research in order to understand the needs of Indian users. Android operating system will be used for this tablet as this is a mobile operating system and being an open-source operating system, it lets developers to design custom applications independent of the handset/tablet maker.

As per the industry analysts, the Indian market for tablet PC is forecasted to reach about a million devices sales in 2011. Since the launch of Apple’s iPad, the tablet market is facing competition with new contenders launching their devices.

Apple’s rival Dell has also launched its tab “Streak” in the country, while Samsung is also there with “Galaxy”. Indian telecom handset makers Spice and Olive had also similar offerings with tablets at lower prices.  With the launch of 3G services, device makers are actively looking at various form factors like 3G handsets and tablet PCs, to cash in on the revenue opportunity.
