Announced in the early February of 2010 Nikon COOLPIX P100 is a high-performance camera that has an effective pixel count of 10.3 Mega-pixels and a 26× optical zoom. Like most other Nikon cameras COOLPIX P100 also has NIKKOR ED glass lens with a focal range of 26mm wide-angle through 678mm super-telephoto. The camera is designed such a way that it is user-friendly and the features can be learnt quickly in no time. Nikon COOLPIX P100 is available in black color. It has a Vari-angle high resolution clear color display that can be tilted as much as 90 degrees upward or 82 degrees downward. The camera has a pop-up flash with a button on the side. There is a provision for the user to use either the eye-piece or the display screen for taking pictures with the help of a button on the left side of the camera.The camera runs on proprietary Lithium-ion battery and has a battery life up to about 250 photographs.
The features to look out for in Nikon COOLPIX P100 are its excellent AF speeds, superb image quality (even in a zoomed image) and good high ISO performance. Nikon COOLPIX P100 is the successor P90 which was released a year earlier and has an additional 2MP extra than P100. But Nikon COOLPIX P100’s enhanced image quality with new backside illumination (BSI) CMOS sensor that makes it a superior model to P90. This feature increases the amount of light each pixel receives. The camera’s enhanced feature makes it possible for better pictures to be captured in dark indoor situations and shooting night scenes.
The COOLPIX P100 has various modes found in major digital cameras such as Auto, Scene (this camera 16 scene modes), Scene Auto, Smart portrait, User setting, Manual, Program Auto, Aperture priority, Shutter priority and has additional features such as Sport continuous, backlit scene HDR, Subject tracking and captures HD videos with 1080p resolution (1920 x 1080) at either 14 or 12 MGPS. The video capacity is around 2 hours with approximately 30 frames per second. The optical zoom and the auto focus functions continue to be working during the video mode as well. The camera also has HS modes to capture images in slow motion rate. The camera has microphone fitted on top of the flash which clearly records the audio during video shoot.

The drawbacks of Nikon COOLPIX P100 are that it delays in changing to video mode, takes time during photographs shot in sports mode, the battery gets discharged a pretty fast rate.
