Recovering Your Hard Drive a USB Thumb Drive

In today’s society, most personal computers will have an immense amount of data that needs to be backed up consistently. These backups are vital if anything is to happen to the main hard drive of the computer. However, there may come a time when something may happen to your external hard drive to a point where the computer is no longer acknowledging its connection. Corruption or a dead connection may be involved and your data may be lost if action is not taken to retrieve the data from the drive. Below are a few steps that will assist you in obtaining the data from a corrupted or dead external hard drive.

1) Purchasing a converter

A converter would need to be purchased from a local computer store. If you are unsure about the proper conversion device needed for your hard drive, obtain the specifications from the device and provide them to the technician at time of purchase.

This converter would need to have a proper setup to transfer the data over to a new computer. More often than not, these devices would be set up for either a Sata to USB conversion or an IDE to USB conversion.

2) Removal

Using the proper tools, such a small screwdriver, the external hard drive would have to be carefully removed from its casing. This is very delicate work and should be handled with care in order to maintain the data on the drive. Once the drive has been removed from the shell, the converter should be connected accordingly to the conversion device that you recently purchased.

3) Computer Connection

Once the hard drive has been properly connected to the converter, place the USB link into the computer you will be transferring the data on to. Once the computer has seen the device, it should flash on the screen a message saying that device is ready for use after it has installed all of its components. If not, there may be drivers necessary to install on the computer before the converter can work properly. These drivers can be found on the company’s website that has manufactured the converter.

4) Retrieval

Once the computer has detected the drive, venture out to the drive it has created on your pc. You should see the files that were stored on your external hard drive. Copy all of the important files needed to your computer and then safely remove the conversion device from your computer using the icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen.

The steps above should assist you in your attempt to obtain any information from a corrupted or dead external hard drive.
