Replace Automated Numbers in MS Word With Text

The numbering feature of MS Word automates numbering. Once turned on, the software numbers each of the items that have been keyed in. The feature can be found on the Home tab of the Paragraph group and on the formatting toolbar of the 2003 edition of Word.
The feature is easy to use but problems may crop up when documents are to be copied and they contain numbered lists. Normally, the lists get renumbered automatically in continuation of the list that has been inserted, which if overlooked can lead to embarrassing situations. Once the numbering is completed, conversion of the numbers to plain text follows.

The way to go about it has been given below:

  • Select the numbered list, go to edit option and click on Cut and then copy it on the clipboard.
  • Choose Paste special from the Paste dropdown in the clipboard group on the Home tab
  • Select Unformatted Text and click OK in the resulting dialog box.

As a result, the auto-generated numbers get replaced in plain text. There’s one thing you must be careful of, and that is, you won’t be able to make any changes in the list after the conversion into plain text has been done, so you must be sure that your list is complete before conversion.
