Annual smartphone sales to cross 420 million in 2011

According to a research conducted by a research firm IMS Research, It is expected that around 420 million smartphone will be sold in 2011.

This will account for 28% of the total cell phone sale in 2011. IMS research has also estimated that the smartphone sale will touch nearly 1 billion mark by 2016.

Samsung and Apple will probably take a lead in 2011 and the current market leader Nokia is losing the race in the smartphone market.

According to the statistics Apple is slowly capturing the market and now accounts for 19% of global smartphone sales in the first quarter of 2011 compared to 16% in the same quarter last year.

According to IMS, Samsung is the only company that has made some remarkable unit sales gains year-over-year in the first quarter.

IMSResearch writes:

Of the traditional handset manufacturers, Samsung has demonstrated the best results in recent years. Capitalizing on its diverse portfolio – which includes devices using the company’s own bada operating system along with Android and Windows Mobile – as well as its highly popular Galaxy series, Samsung smartphone market share increased from about three percent in 1Q 2010 to over 13 percent in 1Q 2011. At the same time smaller, dedicated smartphone vendors such as HTC have seen their position rise dramatically.

Well I am not a big expert in this arena but one this for sure that Apple and Samsung will surely capture a large market share very soon.

Nokia get ready ready to defend yourself…
