“Education Only” iMac Launched

Apple rolled out the new iMac for educational institutions. The iMac has been priced at just $999 and is a lower end model. It is being marketed as “Education only” and is not for sale to individuals. This model can be purchased from Apple’s Higher Educational online store and Apple has also published the specifications of the model online.

The specifications and features are as follows-

  • 3.1GHz Intel Core i3 Dual-Core
  • 21.5-inch LCD
  • AMD Radeon HD 6750 with 256MB
  • 2GB RAM
  • 250GB Hard Drive
  • SuperDrive
  • OS X Lion

This new model of iMac has an integrated mini Display port but it doesn’t consist of a Thunderbolt port and which is quite intriguing as all the models that are on sale at present possess this feature. The next model that is higher that the $999 iMac is the $1149 iMac and it is powered by a 2.5 GHz Quad-Core i5 complete with 4GB RAM as well as a 500 GB hard drive.

This is not the first time that Apple is offering exclusive education only models, it has done the same in the past. These special models may be more price sensitive than the others for sale in the market and to deal with this Apple has adjusted the prices of the hardware and thus the model is available below the $1000 mark.

Besides this, Apple also has another iMac to offer to its customers. This iMac is 20 inches and is even cheaper than the education only model and is priced at $899. The model has an Intel Core 2 Duo process but does not have the OS XLion.
