Facebook’s new timeline offers several new features businesses will like. The layout is highly visual, providing businesses a better opportunity to grab attention right away.

1. Improved Visual Impact

The huge banner image across the top of the timeline home page is the most obvious format change. Businesses can use their images to create interest in new products or instantly establish tones for their pages. A smaller profile picture set into the lower left corner of the large banner is perfect for a thumbnail image such as a company logo.

2. Standardized Landing Pages

In the past, businesses created links to special gateway landing pages. The links prompted customers to enter email information or sign up for newsletters before moving on to the main business page. Facebook’s timeline does away with that option, forcing businesses to route all links through the timeline instead.

3. Categorized Listing

Timeline lets users create special lists for each type of page they visit and like. A business page can be included on a list of similar businesses. Rather than inclusion in only the general news feed, business-related posts are listed separately from posts of family and friends.

4. Appearance of Apps

The tab for apps is located at the top of the page below the main banner, rather than along the side of the page. Although they are easier for users to find, it may take time for customers to realize that app links lead to more content than with the old format.

5. Featured Status

Timeline allows users to pin important status updates to the tops of their timelines for a certain timeframe. Businesses could use this feature to promote new products or publish important messages. Once a status is pinned, it remains prominent no matter how many status updates are posted to the wall afterwards.

6. Top Tabs

Text-based tabs that once lined up along the side of the page are now displayed as images with links and are located at the top of the page below the main banner. Businesses have some control over the order in which tabs are displayed. For instance, a tab for invoice factoring might not need top billing, and apps and games connected with the business can appear at the beginning of the display.

7. Prominent Company Bio

With the old Facebook page design, company bios and information were stacked along the side margin where they could easily be missed. Timeline places the bio front and center, listing it directly below the profile picture at the top of the page. The timeline design presents company information to customers at first glance, packing more punch than the old design.

These changes make p age information is easier to control. Businesses can choose and change specific highlights they want to draw attention to quickly and easily.

Ever found yourself getting frustrated with your Internet speed? Wondering why you’re not hitting the same speeds as the ones your provider advertised? Inconsistent speeds are one of the most common complaints for broadband users, and can significantly affect browsing and downloading experiences. Some of the most serious problems include slowdowns at particular times of the day and night, as well as complete crashes. This is particularly annoying if you like to stream content or play games.

However, there are some simple solutions that can allow you to increase your broadband speed. These aren’t necessarily technical adjustments, but rather a set of key areas that should be explored for your connection and your particular provider. From testing your speed and enquiring about caps with your provider, to buying accessories and tweaking settings, there are options available that could make a major difference to your broadband.

1 – Speed Testing and Enquiries

The first stage of any attempt to increase broadband speed is to get an accurate sense of your connection. Many websites offer services that can provide an instant indication of your average speed. This usually involves making a small download to your computer that will test its responsiveness.

However, a speed test can vary at different times of the day, and should only be tried after closing down any background applications, and after you’ve updated your software. You can also make a general speed check by checking on the performance of your street as a whole. Broadband comparison programs like StreetStats allow you to do this.

You should also speak to your provider about any problems with a line. There may be a general fault with a line that affects a whole area, or there may be a limitation on your account. The latter problem could happen if you’ve exceeded your usage limit for the month, which often causes an Internet connection to be capped.

2 – Buying Accessories

Another option is to invest in new accessories for your Internet connection. As a general rule, you should avoid normal telephone extension cables, and should try to have as direct a connection as possible. By connecting your computer directly to the main phone socket, you can avoid losing speed through low quality cabling. Moreover, an I-Plate can be fitted to your connection socket. This works to prevent interference from other wired signals, and can make a significant difference to your broadband speed.

Other appliances worth investing in are better routers, and an enhanced aerial for your Wi-Fi. You should also consider testing the performance of a laptop or desktop Ethernet network card, which if worn out can generate speed problems. Several companies also provide software that can boost speed by filtering broadband signals. Recent developments in graphene materials have similarly increased the potential to improve the relay of signals to your computer.

3 – Adjusting Settings

Making small changes to your computer usage can help increase the general speed of your broadband connection. When using the Internet, make sure you close down any background applications that use up a lot of memory. In addition, update your software packages on a regular basis, and ensure that a wireless network is password protected to prevent illegal use.

You can also optimise the settings of your computer, with options including the adjustment of microfilters that control the amount of devices using an Internet connection. Routers like BT’s Home Hub 2.0 also regulate what service channels are using the Internet. In the same way, you can adjust Internet browser settings through software that offers turbo modes for conventional programs.

The speed of your broadband will ultimately depend on the kind of package you have, and whether you rely on a DSL connection or a fibre optic cable deal. The latter provides generally faster speeds, but is currently not as widely available as DSL. In this context, it might be worth investing in technologies like fibre optic broadband now to enjoy later benefits in speed and performance.

Understanding The Vital Components Surveillance System

There is no doubting the popularity of surveillance systems today! Home owners and business owners are starting to realize that a security camera system is vital to protecting their homes, businesses, family members, employees, and assets. In the past most people only relied on traditional alarm systems, but as criminals have gotten smarter and local law enforcement resources have shrunk, most people are realizing a surveillance system is their most reliable tool for protection.

A surveillance system consists of numerous components that are designed to work together. A standard security camera system consists of a security DVR, the security cameras you choose, a power supply to power the cameras, a CCTV monitor to view the surveillance footage, and CCTV cable and BNC connectors that connect everything together. Installing a surveillance system is easy and really consists of mounting and connecting devices. Although in the past most people relied on professional installers to install a complete surveillance system for them, the modern systems of today are so simple that do-it-yourselfers all over the world are taking their installations into their own hands!

Security DVR and CCTV Monitor

The security DVR is the heart of the surveillance system. The security DVR is where the video that is captured from the security cameras is live viewed, monitored, stored, and downloaded. The security DVR is also loaded with features that allow you to manage the entire system and even each security camera individually. Plus the security DVR is usually network capable which means you can attach it to the internet so you can view your cameras from any computer in the world.

The security DVR comes with pre-installed software and a hard drive where video is stored. Security DVR’s are available with multiple sizes of hard drives to support the amount of days you want to store video. For most people they like to save at least 30 days of video just in case there is a delay in realizing an event took place. So the DVR allows you to go back to a previous data and time and watch the video that was captured at that particular time.

Security DVR’s are also available to support different sizes of security camera systems. The most common DVR’s will provide 4, 8, and 16 ports or channels to support the number of cameras you will have on your system. Each security camera you attach to your security DVR will need to have its own channel. So it is important to plan your system carefully and choose the DVR that has the channels you will need now and in the future.

For most people they use a CCTV monitor to watch their surveillance video. A CCTV monitor attaches directly to the security DVR, and this is where you can watch the live video your CCTV system is capturing. A CCTV monitor is not like a standard computer monitor. A CCTV monitor has high resolution qualities that allow you to watch clean crisp surveillance video. Plus it is designed to be on 24 hours a day year around, where a computer monitor just cannot take that amount of usage. Although a true CCTV monitor is not cheap, having the ability to watch your surveillance video at the highest possible resolution may prove to be of much value to you.

Security Cameras

Security cameras come in all types, sizes, and shapes. They also all have different features, benefits, and qualities. It really all depends on your budget and your needs. But like with anything you will get what you pay for. The most common security camera types are bullet cameras, dome cameras, covert cameras, box cameras, and PTZ cameras. It is really up to you to evaluate each camera location and choose the camera types that best support your application.

Choosing security cameras for your installation can be a challenge. But it is always best to buy name brand cameras that offer the best warranty. If you buy security cameras with a 1 year warranty there is a good chance those cameras will not last much more than a year. There is a reason for the poor warranty, which is why the manufacturer is not backing them for longer.

CCTV Cable, BNC Connectors, and CCTV power Supplies

The most common cable used for a security camera installation is a Siamese CCTV cable. This is basically an RG59 coaxial cable and an 18-2 power cable connected together to create one easy to install cable. The RG59 coaxial cable will be connected to each security camera and to the channels or video inputs on the back of the security DVR. These connections are made via BNC connectors, and this is the cable that video is transmitted from the security cameras to the security DVR. So you will need to have the ability to install a BNC connector on both ends of the coaxial cable to make these two connections. To install a BNC connector you will need to have a coaxial cable stripper to prepare the cable and a crimp tool to terminate the connector.

The 18-2 power cable component of a CCTV cable will also be connected to the security camera with the opposite end going to a CCTV camera power supply. This power cable will eventually send the required power to the camera so it can operate. CCTV power supplies also come in different configurations providing multiple channel quantities to support different sizes of systems. They also come with different voltage levels to support cameras that need a particular amount of power.

At the end of the day installing a security camera system can be simple and painless. It is important to choose the right products to ensure those vital areas of your home or business are secured properly. It is always recommended for a buyer to do the research, get some education, and then go out and buy the right products. The great thing about security camera systems is that they can be built up over time, and as you see weaknesses in our security measures you can easily plug the hole by adding cameras. Remember the end result is to make sure your home or business has complete coverage so you have the confidence that the things that are most important to you are secure.

Guest Writer Erik Johnson is a security industry professional with numerous years of home and business security experience. As a veteran of the industry he understands the importance of putting the right security measure in place to protect the things that are most important to you.

Internet marketing isn’t just about advertising to people to get them to buy from you. It’s also about building relationships with your audience so that they will want to do business with you and so that they will want to refer others to you, too. If your marketing tactics are more like pressure sales tactics, you probably won’t do very well. Most people prefer a soft sell to a hard one and it can take time to build trust, particularly online.

Here are some things to remember when you do your internet marketing:

Check your bounce rate regularly. Is it climbing higher?

Watch subscriber numbers. Do people quickly unsubscribe or un-follow?

What’s your rate of repeat customers?

What’s your rate of referring customers?

What’s your online page rank? Who’s linking to you?

Bounce Rate: A bounce is a person who leaves the same page of your site they arrive on. Something about the page did not appeal to them or maybe it turned them off. Your website statistics will tell you what your bounce rate is. Take this seriously on a per page basis so you can tweak every single page that people land on to make sure nothing is off-putting or too aggressive.

Unsubscribers: If you’re building an internet marketing mailing list and trying to market via social sites, the numbers are very revealing. If, for instance, you lose a bunch of subscribers after a specific activity, this can tell you that the activity was either annoying, aggressive, or badly orchestrated. Learn from these mistakes. And conversely, if numbers surge after specific activities, this tells you that certain things are appealing to your audience. Watch your social media follower numbers as well. A big drop or a big jump warrants analysis on your part.

Repeats and Referrals: If people buy from you once and then never buy again, either they weren’t happy or you simply didn’t take advantage of the fact that they might be open to buying again. Make sure you strive to capitalise on new customer activities so that you don’t miss out on opportunities to engage them again. Test out some different techniques to find the right one for re-engaging past customers.

Initiating a referral process is smart, too. Reward people for referring others, if possible. And try to develop a method of finding out how people find you. People often refer business when they’re happy and getting a high number of referrals will tell you that you’re doing something right.

Measure your online reputation: Do you have a good Google page rank? The quantity and quality of sites that point to your website can be telling about your online reputation with people and with search engines. The first few pages of Google and Bing results are going to be telling, too. You want to know what people will find when they search for you. If your site is quite new it can take time to figure this out but keep it in mind when measuring your internet marketing campaigns so you’ll know if your reputation is helping you, hurting you, or if you need to do more to manage that reputation.

Internet marketing is a work in progress. It’s an ever changing climate in the world of online business. Finding the right approach to foster and nurture relationships can take time. Working continually at refining your processes will serve you well and help you maximise your return on investment in internet marketing techniques.

Men and women are different in lots of ways, so it is no surprise that they use mobile devices in different ways. We do not live on completely different planets yet, so we also have similarities in the ways that we use phones. Here are some of the top examples of how genders use phones.

Gossip

Two thirds of all human conversation is gossip, so it is no surprise that this is extended to use of cell phones. Men and women both admit to using their cell phones as a way to gossip via email, texting and chatting. Gossip is a good and healthy thing, because it is the way that we socially groom each other.

Establishing social skills

Young females, but especially young (and even some older) males, use mobile devices as a way to overcome social awkwardness. It is a means to learn to communicate, and more teens communicate now then pre-mobile times. Due to mobile phones they communicate with more people, more frequently refining their social skills.

Mobile as a bodyguard

Females will frequently use the mobile phone as a body guard. If they feel uncomfortable somewhere they may even pretend to have a conversation with someone, so that no one will try to bother them or approach them. Males do not do this as frequently, but sometimes they will if walking through a rough inner city area.

More of talking and texting

Women have been show to talk 22% more than the average man via their phone. They also text more by texting an average of 159 more texts a month. This is because females often use their phones to maintain their relationships, while men use their phones for more basic communication.

Keeping tabs on the kids

Studies have shown that females will keep track of their daughters via cell phones, more than men will reach out to sons or daughters. This is credited to the importance of matriarchal bonds in society, and the female need for that type of bond. In more general terms females will work on establishing individual bonds with females, while males tend to scatter their attention.

Overall cell phones have opened up communication in a good way. We communicate similarly to how we did in small communities with back-fence chatting via texting and calling. As social creatures, this expansion of communication has been overall healthy for the human community to be able to continue social grooming.

Approximately 40 per cent of Americans own a smartphone, and that percentage is only going to grow. And it’s hardly restricted to America either as sales are soaring across the globe. There are so many benefits to owning a smartphone, but have you ever stopped to think about the things they’ve changed for the worse? Here’s a selection of negatives that will have you reaching for your Nokia 3310 faster than you can say app store!

Our Memories

Smartphones mean we can access all the information we’ll ever need from pretty much anywhere in just a few seconds. It’s astonishing when you stop and think about it. But before we all carried the internet in our pocket’s we’d actually have to try and remember things.

This isn’t just speculation either. Studies conducted at Columbia University have found that we’re a lot less likely to remember something if we know we’ll always be able to find it somewhere else.

Friendly Debates

Everyone likes having a friendly debate with a few friends. Just a few years ago you could be sat in a restaurant for hours having a good natured disagreement but now someone always has to ruin it by whipping out their smartphone. Sure it’s a great feeling when you’re right, but when you’re outdone by your mate ignorance really is bliss.

Pub Quizzes

At 95% per cent of quizzes there’ll be a team looking up the answers on their smartphones. Ok so I completely made up that stat, but it’s got to be around that figure.

The problem is that it’s made cheating so easy. Back in the day nobody would have gone to the trouble of smuggling in a book about African flags on the off chance the topic will come out, but when you’re struggling and you know the answers in your pocket you just can’t help yourself.

Celebrity Glamour

Before smartphones ruled the world we could sit at desks and dream of living like a celebrity. What a great way to pass the time. But Twitter has well and truly destroyed these dreams by showing that celebrities lives are just as boring as ours!

Before we could sit there wondering whether Dave Grohl was chilling with 15 groupies or throwing a TV out the window. As it tuns out he’s “just eaten some crackers, hehe”! I’m sure if celebs had to log onto their computer to tell us such trivial stuff they’d think twice. That’s why I’m blaming the smartphone.

Communication

This is a bold statement to make, as smartphones are meant to make it easier to keep in touch with people. Of course they make it easier, but is checking a friends Facebook status or seeing what they’re up to on Twitter really communicating with them?

There was a time when the only time to find out a friends news was to ask them, even if it was just by sending them a text. Now their whole lives are played out in front of us, so we don’t even need to ask.

When Steve McDougall isn’t playing snake on his Nokia 3310 he works as a copywriter for the online novelty gifts retailer Find Me A Gift.

Most people know that any information that is personal and important to you is meant to be kept someplace safe and secure, and if it’s on a computer, the computer has to be well protected. What many people don’t realize is that their smart phones are essentially miniature computers – they hold and store data and information that are just as important as that stored on your computer.

But no one ever stops to think about how to keep their smart phones safe. Consumers don’t go running out buying anti-virus software for their new phone when they upgrade to a smart phone like they would a new computer. But it’s just as important, if not more so, to keep your smart phone safe as it is your computer.

Believe it or not, hackers recently have started targeting smart phones more and more, finding new and different ways to hack into your mobile device and access all of your mobile information. That’s why it’s becoming increasingly important as popularity in smart phones grows to protect the information that’s important to you, no matter the platform it is on.

Use a PIN/Lock Code

Most smart phones now have an option to password protect your interface, much like a computer does when you turn it on or log in. Take advantage of this great security feature and come up with a strong password so that only you can unlock and access the information on your phone.

Every time you open your phone, wake it up from sleep mode or turn it on, it will ask you for your PIN or lock code. This way you can insure you are the only person with access to your phone, as long as you are careful not to share your PIN with anyone.

A study shows that 54% of Americans do not set up this feature and because of which could easily fall victim to information being accessed and/or stolen. If a phone is lost, stolen or unattended, anyone can pick up an unlocked phone and have free reign over any information on it. Protect yourself and set up your PIN.

Be Careful With Wi-Fi

Almost all smart phones on the market are Wi-Fi enabled so that they aren’t always accessing the Internet or transmitting data via the 3G network. Wi-Fi on your smart phone is helpful for anyone looking to limit their data plans or save on phone bill costs.

That said, the Wi-Fi settings can pose a threat to the security of your phone. First, you should make sure that the Wi-Fi network you are joining is a secure and reliable one. Secondly, you should always make sure you turn your Wi-Fi settings off completely when you are finished using the connection.

By disabling the Wi-Fi settings you are insuring that any potential hacker who may have access to the network will not continue to have access to your phone even when you don’t think you are connected anymore.

If you want to insure your phone’s safety, just take the 10 extra seconds to go into your settings and manually turn off your Wi-Fi when you are done with it.

Be Careful With Applications

It only takes common sense to know that you should be careful of which applications you are downloading to your smart phone, but your precautions when it comes to applications should extend well beyond just “being careful.”

For starters, read the fine print. It’s easy to skip over the installation details in anticipation of getting the app downloaded and starting to use it, but pay attention to the “strings” attached with the application. Does it download any additional apps on your phone as a package? Does it require a subscription? Things like these are important to understand.

Also try to make sure you are only downloading apps from “official” places, like iTunes, for example. Don’t just search for an app online and download it from an untrusted site – you never know what additional, unwanted downloads it may come with.

Back Up Your Data

Just like with a computer, you want to make sure that any information you store on your smart phone is backed up regularly, either to your computer or to an external device. The logic here is the same as with a computer – if anything should ever happen to your phone or you were to lose any data, you want to have access to it another way.

Most modern smart phones make backing up your data easy by offering either an easy synchronization process or a cloud network to wirelessly store your information. Just make sure you know which back up system works most reliably for your phone, and perform back ups frequently.

Install Security Software

Believe it or not, there are a number of options out there in terms of security software for your smart phone. Norton, for example, offers a thorough security software similar to the one they market for computers that will help further insure the safety of your mobile information.

Security software for smart phones offer different applications than for computers, so make sure you shop for one that’s right for your smart phone platform.

With the increased attention hackers are now paying to mobile networks and mobile devices, it is becoming increasingly important to protect your mobile information, whether you think about it or not. Don’t let yourself have anything to worry about and protect your information before something goes wrong.

Alison Waters is a freelance writer who works closely with several managed support services providers to make sure her information is safe on her computers, her smart phone and her tablet. She encourages everyone to protect all of their personal information and data no matter the platform.

Living out of a suitcase and traveling may be more fun than staying in your cubicle, but staying connected to the office while you’re traveling can be challenging. Fortunately, with the advent of smart phones and tablets, and the boom in free apps, it is getting far easier to stay seamlessly in touch with your home base.

Rev up your internet connection and download one (or more) these 5 free apps to keep you connected to the office while you’re traveling.

1. Evernote.

Two of the most important attributes of any successful business is to the ability come up with good new ideas and develop them in a collaborative setting. The free app is available for all smart phones, tablets, and standard computer web browsers.
2. LinkedIn.

I probably don’t need to sell you on the importance of the LinkedIn social network for professionals, but you may not have tried their mobile app. With the company’s free app you can access your network from your mobile device. Forget about stuffing your pockets with business cards, just connect on LinkedIn. You can also get the latest industry news and easily share content with your professional network. This free app creates a folder that can be shared across your entire network of colleagues as well as on everyone’s mobile device. If a new report has been issued or a new contract received back at the office, you can have instant access to them – just like you were sitting at your desk.

If you make wise use of these 5 free apps when you’re traveling, in many ways it will be like you haven’t even left the office. We’ll let you be the judge on whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing. And, while you’re pondering that point, which apps can you not live without when you’re playing road warrior?

With the proliferation of smart mobile devices, there is a need for organizations, including web hosts to employ a mobile solution that provides synchronized personal data, such as calendar, email and contact, as well as the ability to enforce anti-theft protection and appropriate security policies. This technology can be implemented by web hosting companies to make it easier for administrator to manage data center safely and easily using mobile devices.

There are plenty of options provided by mobile platforms, third-party software vendors and wireless carriers. Although, many of these methods have been around for years, they still evolve today due to the wide usage of mobile devices.

These are four open source solutions that stand out due to their ability to offer device management functionality and data synchronization:

Funambol

It provides device management and data synchronization for web servers, supporting SyncML and OMA (Open Mobile Alliance) DM 1.2 standards. This tool allows system administrator to sync files, media, notes, tasks, calendars and contacts between cloud sources, servers, PCs, mobile devices, email and social network messages. With Funambol, system administrators can also push email to client devices. Since any data can be synchronized to the cloud, all end users can open and edit files through AJAX web portal.

The DM (Device Management) functionality offers web hosting administrator the opportunity to manage devices, especially those supporting 3G and 4G technology. Supported devices are not only smartphones, but also USB data dongles, residential gateways, smart power meters and mobile data-enabled video cameras. It covers bootstrap, configuration, update, monitoring and control of any DM supported device. It is also possible to gather OoS data from mobile devices and offer software provisioning. In case of theft or lost, the DM functionality can remotely wipe and lock the smartphone to prevent risking unauthorized access to web host’s data center. Funambol also supports upgrading firmware OTA to efficiently fix bugs and patch security holes. However, when establishing a Funambol service the web host needs to dedicate a single server for the service and it can be installed on GNU/Linux and Windows platforms. The Community Edition is available for free and if a web hosting company requires higher availability and scalability, it should purchase the Carrier Edition.

Zimbra

It is a traditional collaboration groupware and email solution, which also supports mobile synchronization. Although it offers a complete solution, Zimbra server has limited functionality and features. The Zimbra server is an open source platform and can be modified to web host’s requirements and supports CalDAV for calendars and contacts, iCal, CaedDAV and IMAP/POP email. An AJAX-based interface allows system administrator to access tasks, calendar, address book and any file. Additionally, Zimbra uses an optimized interface for mobile devices. Push notifications and mobile syncing, however aren’t available for mobile devices. Although it lacks proper Outlook support, users can install clients for Linux, Mac and Windows. Zimbra is downloadable in various binary formats, for both 32- and 64-bit version.

Zarafa

Just like Zimbra, system administrators can also use Zarafa for collaboration groupware and email solution. If administrators use ActiveSync devices, they can be supported via BlackBerry devices on BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) and Z-Push. ActiveSync standard is commonly available in many devices, including Windows Phone, Android and iOS. Zarafa also offers OTA synchronization and it is compatible with many native email clients. Zarafa supports folder management, message searching, attachment viewing and calendar management.

Support is provided for BlackBerry devices in the Enterprise and Professional edition and it requires the free BES Express (BlackBerry Edition Server Express) or the standard BES (BlackBerry Edition Server). It also provides synchronization of calendar, address book and email. You can open attachments and search messages. It is also possible to create meetings and calendar appointments and manage meeting invitations. Zarafa properly supports Outlook synchronization, while the MDM (Mobile Device Management) plugin allows us to wipe or lock a smartphone over the online access. The community version can downloaded as precompiled packages for popular Linux/Unix platforms, including Ubuntu, Debian, SUSE Linux Enterprise server and Red Hat Enterprise. You are also allowed to download Zarafa source code and make necessary modifications.

Enterprise iOS Controllers

It is a simple and small open-source project developed by Haruhiko Nishi. It can remotely enforce security policies on devices running iOS 4 and iOS 5, after necessary configuration is made to the MS Exchange Settings. Compared to more popular MDM solutions, it is still somewhat primitive, but users will appreciate its open source and free platform. Enterprise iOS Controller employs the ActiveSync technology, especially on commands related to mobile device management. It allows remote wiping and remote security policy enforcement. Data synchronization for Mail forwarding calendar and tasks is not yet supported; however Haruhiko plans to add them later. Since you can download the source code, it is possible to develop additional features yourself.
